5 Reasons That Teaching a Child to Sew is a Good Idea
Brought to you by Michelle Hutchins of Learn to Sew with Michelle in West Boylston.
- Eye Hand Coordination and fine motor skills. From cutting to pinning to threading a needle, sewers (pronounced SOH-ers) strengthen their fine motor skills in everything they do.
- Real Life Math Application. Much more than math problems on a page, sewers become adept at measuring, algebra, and geometry as they turn their ideas into real life creations. They often forget they're "doing math" in the process!
- Problem Solving. Whether the problem at hand is how to resize a pattern or fix an issue with the sewing machine, problem solving is the cornerstone of any sewing project.
- Connection to Fabric Goods in Our World. Clothes, bedding, accessories - these things just don't appear at stores. Sewers grow a real appreciation of the time, money and skills that are required to make so many of the items that surround us.
- It's Empowering! You take a pile of fabric, thread, a sewing machine or needle, and an idea. With your skills you then create something that wasn't there before. Something you can wear, hold things in, or give to a loved one. Learning to sew is incredibly empowering!
And don't forget:
Replacing buttons, hemming pants, repairing tears in pockets, up-cycling a thrift store find... those life skills are, of course, just as important, too!
And it's FUN!
