Interested in sewing? Learn about what class you should take!

Brought to you by Michelle Hutchins of Learn to Sew with Michelle in West Boylston.

  • For kids, Michelle offers basic hand sewing with simple projects. Hand sewing is needed in so many areas. Even if they don't choose sewing as a passion, this basic knowledge will be useful in life.  If they do choose sewing as a passion, it will be a necessary tool in whatever direction they take their sewing journey.
  • If you have no sewing experience, or haven't sewn since 7th grade home economics class, you should start with one of the "Intro to Machine" classes. This class for kids ages 8+ older and adults 14+ and older. Teens can choose which age group they feel most comfortable in. In this class you'll learn (or be reminded of) the basic functions of a sewing machine. You'll also experience a bit of hand sewing. You can take this class as many times as you'd like. This class is also a prerequisite for most of my other classes offered unless you have prior sewing experience.

Some people like to follow up with a Beginner 4 Week Session to reinforce those basic skills. Michelle recommends this for anyone who needs more confidence with the machine. And definitely recommended for kids. You'll complete at least 3 different easy projects in this skill building session where we'll build on the basics from the Intro class.

Are you more confident in your sewing skills? Move on up to more difficult projects like Open Workshops or Fun Skill Building Classes (there's even a Bunny for April, and tote bags, banners, home accessories, and a T-shirt quilt!)

Open workshops are to work on whatever you'd like!

  • A one-time group class where you get to work on what you want to work on!
  • You'll have Michelle's assistance just as if you were enrolled in one of the beginner classes.
  • You'll get to meet other awesomely creative sewers who are also doing their own thing.
  • How you go about choosing a project is up to you!
  • Bring one or several projects from home that you're stuck on so you can get unstuck. Sign up for as many of these classes as you'd like and work on one big project start to finish.
  • You must have some sewing machine experience to attend this class (You must know how to thread a machine, make and load a bobbin and sew a straight line).
  • Classes are limited to 4 people, so there will be enough of Michelle to go around and you're welcome use her machines and tools, or you can bring your own. A cutting and ironing table available for use as well as all of the tools you could need.

Fun Skill Building Classes are one (or sometimes two) classes to work on a specific project that she's offering. In the past, projects have included a Summer Tote Bag and Wet Bag with Zipper.  For these classes, you'll be required to purchase materials for the class. Check out some of the classes for March and April here.

If you prefer a one on one class, Michelle also offers Private Lessons. You can work on anything you'd like during this 2 hour class. You can sign up once, or several times. Whatever you'd like! Email Michelle for more information at SewWithMichelle@gmail.com

Michelle will also be offering FUNdamental Summer Camps.  These are for kids 8+ with any level of experience.  (The Intro class is required to attend a camp session). Sessions will be a 3-day camp in July and a 2-day camp in August. If you're interested, email Michelle for more information at SewWithMichelle@gmail.com
